Philla Barkhorn - Day 4

Every weekday for six weeks this summer I will be picking up my son from school at 12:30. However, to be first on line I need to arrive by noon, my day brightened considerably when I realized I could pack a folding chair and use this time for my sketchbook challenge. So I took half an hour and sketched this tree. I am glad this little coincidence occurred, needing to sketch and having 30 minutes a day where I can't do much else but use my phone and wait. Who knows maybe some of the other parents will join me, or pose for me, wouldn't that be nice?

Amy Donahue -- Buildings and thumbnails.

So here are a few from the last few days.

This one was sketched while deciding an angle to paint this old abandoned house (and tire swing, can you spot it?) off Huguenot Springs Road. I ended up painting the location from a different angle.

Sketched this while sitting at Caturra, taking breaks from working on emails/finance/website. It's the Long and Foster building across Midlo Tnpk from Caturra.

Can this still count for a page in the ol' sketchbook? I was doing some thumbnails to decide what to paint this morning at the Woolridge Lake. My new easel arrived this week (I love it, set up is so quick) and I've been eager to take it outside to paint. I decided on the composition with the willow tree (see the circled bit of scribbles above). I also wrote down the quote of the day from the folks passing by commenting on my set up. It was, "No breakfast?? You've got the rest of the set up." :) I always get a kick out of what people have to say about a painter painting outdoors. Hehe.

Even though it's not a sketchbook page, here's my little panel painted from the sketch. The color temperature of the trees changed pretty drastically from the time I started to the time I finished -- 8:30ish to 10ish. Clouds disappeared the the sky was blue by the end. Shoulda readdressed the trees in the background, but oh well... maybe another time. I ran out of time & needed to be home to work out with the hubby.

I've been enjoying all your sketches. So inspiring and beautiful! Keep 'em coming!

Molly Greenwald - Day 1

Hi everyone,
I was excited to hear about this blog and it's wonderful to be joining in with you all! Here is a sketch I did this afternoon of a small bust of Mozart that was lying around collecting dust... It reminded me of the Bargue plates so I tried to follow a similar method while I drew it.

Days 8 & 9 - Pat Frank

Here are my sketches from yesterday and today...I'm working on facial features...so...here are a few ears...

And a couple of left eyes..

Maybe tomorrow I should sketch some right eyes...you know, for symmetry?!

Until then...

I'm a little behind so I thought I would post the last 3 I've done. On the flowers, I tried a sketchy method and then a modified contour. The man is a favorite artist of mine. I was watching a painting video of his and was so inspired I decided to pause it and sketch the play of light and shadow on his face.

Philla Barkhorn - Day 3

Ok, this is an exercise called "Tilty Cast" drawing that my teacher asked me to do. I realized that I often set up my still lifes so they are really easy for me, a horizontal table with fruit wonderfully lit so that it is relatively easy for me to show form. This set up was on a table at a crazy angle, with a white piece of paper (again at a crazy angle) under the objects. So I was really thrown off and found it very difficult. (Yes, I am cheating, I did this a few weeks ago!). I think I will try it again, this time knowing what to expect; the unexpected.

Day 7 - Pat Frank

Hello everyone!! Today I decided to sketch a young woman's face. This was done after I spent some time watching a couple of videos by Stan Prokopenko on drawing heads. The technique is based on the work done by Andrew Loomis. You can check out all kinds of great drawing videos HERE (www.Proko.Com). Very informative...and very entertaining! So here's my first effort at drawing a head/face without a photo or model to work from...

I sort of surprised myself...me thinks it's not half bad!! I really like her "dreamy" eyes!! But now as I study the photo, I think they're a bit wide-set! arrggh!! I have my drawing lesson tomorrow, so I'll be getting some feedback from my very talented "portraitist" art teacher, Elizabeth Salim! She'll be surprised!! Seven sketches in a row!! I think this is my most consistent sketching since I started taking lessons 18 months ago!!

See you tomorrow with another sketch!

Philla Barkhorn - Day 2

When ever I want to get back to basics I sketch apples. I didn't do much drawing this spring due to some other work I had to put first. It is a great feeling to be in a quiet room and just draw.

Day 6 - Pat Frank

So today's sketch is from a cooking magazine photo...I've been eyeing it for weeks...and decided I'd try sketching it...

Makes me hungry for some guacamole and tortilla chips!! Until tomorrow....

Philla Barkhorn - Day 1

Sketch of Alex with the help of my teacher, Monica Baumann. She is teaching me to measure with my eyes only, no more holding the pencil up and comparing. Wasn't drawing supposed to get easier over time? I'm still waiting! Thanks for letting me join this challenge, I am excited about what the summer will bring.

Portraits of the backs of people's heads. yep.

This was from Sunday, can you tell? :)

A dear soul who is participating in the Summer Sketchbook Challenge is actually represented in one of the above portraits. Any guesses on who?

I'm guessing you'll see this page again at a later date when the rest of the boxes get filled on future Sunday mornings.

Day 5 - Pat Frank

Well...it's Day 5 of the "Summer Sketch Challenge"...and here's my latest sketch...a "Copper Kettle" that sits on our mantle. I sketched this one from life rather than using a photo....

I

After I took this photo, I did a bit of adjustment with my shading...specifically near the spout (but didn't re-photograph it). Anyway...I love this kettle...and love sketching it! Until tomorrow....

Day 4 - Pat Frank

It's Monday...and I'm back with my 4th sketch! This one is of a plaster head...eerily it kind of looks like my younger brother when he was a kid! I hope to be able to do some fabulous portraits of our 6 grandkids one day!! And then...maybe even watercolor portraits!

And that's it for me...except to say that I am totally loving this experience...it's motivating me to sketch everyday...which is exactly what a professional procrastinator like me needs!! Plus...I love looking at the sketches from the rest of the participants! Thanks again!! See you tomorrow....
Pat

christina boy - finally started:

i got a small sketchbook today and realized during my first attempt, that i don't really have anything to sketch with - so i used my carpenter pencil and some other pens i had in my superman lunch box that keeps a bunch of random items in my shop.

first - a sketch of the view outside my studio after the rain today:
i have not sketched sketched in a very very long time. i am excited of getting back into it and trying to find some better sketching tools.

second - a detail sketch of something i needed to figure out while building some display cases:
i gather there will be quite a few of these - as they make out the majority of my sketching - either sketches of things i am working on or pieces i want to one day build. i will try to do more sketches of actual objects, as i obviously need the practice a lot

Have a great rest of the weekend...I'll be back tomorrow....

A Heron & Some Thumbnail Sketches

Some painting composition planning as well as the heron at the edge of the Swift Creek Reservoir.

Lazy Sunday afternoon

Thanks so much for inviting me to join you all! I'm grateful for motivation to sketch every day. Here, I started with a drawing of my husband awake...difficult in that he's only still when he sleeps...Got frustrated and moved to the dog, sure that she would be still.  Mid-drawing, she moved. By this time, he was asleep and I almost finished before he moved :-)  It was fun. What a treasure it will be for all of us to look back at a sketchbook full of summer memories. It's been fun to see what you all are working on!  Happy Summer!

Days 1 & 2 - Pat Frank

My first and second days of the Summer Sketch Challenge...and before I post my pics, I need to tell ya that I am new to this art business! After 30 years as an RN, I decided to take up art!! And I am love, love, LOVIN' every minute! Thanks to my sweet friend and teacher Elizabeth Salim, and my adopted daughter Carter, for encouragement, support, and friendship...and to Amy for inviting me to join this fabulous experience!!

OK...here goes...Day 1 of the challenge..."Pears"...

And my Day 2 sketch..."Isla Bleu" (our youngest granddaughter's chubby little foot!)...her toes look a bit "wonky" as I look at this photo...arrggh! Will have to work on "toes"!
Thanks again ladies...have a great rest of the day!

Day #1 (a day late)

I sketched this little fella while babysitting last night.

I decided that instead of buying a new moleskin, I'd use a brand new sketchbook I've ignored for a while. Sketching regularly has never been a discipline of mine, so I'm really excited for some pals to do this with.

Cheers!

First Page

Of course I skipped the first page of the sketchbook, because it's intimidating to put something on that first page. So this is really page 2, but sketch #1. I'll come back to page 1 once I'm "in the swing of things".

Looking forward to seeing your pages!

p.s. I was sketching Mark washing a pan.
