Molly Greenwald

I sketched this little boy, Fatao, off the front cover of a magazine. I loved the variety of values the light created on his face, so I couldn't resist going in with shading. ;)

Today I sat in front of the open window in our sunroom and did a loose drawing of some plants in our garden.

Philla Barkhorn - Day 6

The Block In. Here's a few things I've learned: start with a gesture  (what the heck is a gesture anyway? I just try to imagine if water were running over the figure, where would it go and I draw that)  and then allow yourself five lines to envelope the form. Whittle it down from there using all straight lines. This is very hard for me, so I try to look at the figure and imagine I have five pixie sticks and I need to arrange them around the form to make an envelope, and I try to draw just that. Once that seems right I start to add and subtract and "sculpt" my way in to an accurate drawing. Gregory Mortenson said he can spend up to twelve hours on the block in, hmmmmmm........

Amy Donahue - A few more

A bit of preliminary work in the sketchbook for an upcoming commission piece. I used pen & washes of india ink.

That's my husband. It's without fail that as soon as he knows I'm drawing him he gets antsy and itchy. :) Ah well... he's a good sport.

Pat Frank - Days 10-13...

Still sketching every day...just not quite getting around to photographing and posting every day...so here are my Days 10-13 sketches...

This first one (Day 10) is a sketch of a woman (from the cover of a drawing book) whose nose looks more than a little like Michael Jackson's nose (the later years). And despite my re-working it several times, this lady still looks a bit wonky...

So then I decided to practice noses (Day 11)...and pulled out my book of Bargue Plates...

The next day I thought I'd sketch some tulips (from a web photo)...which will hopefully become a watercolor one day soon...

And yesterday I sketched some cherries (also from a web photo)...that I plan to do in watercolor as well...

And that's what I've been up to!! I wonder what I'll draw today? Maybe more noses?! Arrggh!

its been a while -

its been a little while since i have posted anything from my sketchbook. probably partly due to not sketching much, but here are some pages from the past week:
a few more to-do and how to scribbles from the studio -
i am finding that i really like keeping a sketchbook at the studio, that way i can jot down thoughts and processes and keep them in mind visually for the time i need to start working on them without starting the thought process all over again.
i have forgotten how hard it is to just sketch things. so i am glad this is getting me back into the swing of things.
and may i say that i am so very VERY impressed by what everyone is putting out.
i am really in awe! you ladies are rocking it!

Amy Donahue - Another couple prelim sketches

It was another morning out painting and the prelim sketches took place in my summer sketchbook. I sketched 3 compositions (two horizontal the left-hand page, one vertical on the right) before I settled on the one on the right page.

In case you're interested, this is the scene I was attempting to draw/paint and the little painting part-way to completion.

Philla Barkhorn - Day 5

When I get stuck I like to go to scribble drawings. I find the form emerges without sweating too many of the details. This is a great warm up for me and it feels great to let loose. I brought a friend to her first nude figure drawing session today, we had a great model and she did really well. I find the quiet focused attention in the room a welcome relief from the chatter of the day.
